Aars' historie er lige så gammel, som den er spændende. For ca. 2000 år siden boede de gæve kimbrere her, og den dag i dag kendes himmerlændingene som Kimbrere. Dette kan opleves på Museumscenter Aars, som rummer mere end 12.000 års arkæologi og kulturhistorie. Byens torve er et smukt skue. De prydes af smukke kunstværker skabt af internationale anerkendte kunstnere som Per Kirkeby, Kirsten Ortwed og Poul Gernes. Byens 1200-tals kirke er også et besøg værd.

Vitskøl Monastery

Rold Skov

Rold Skov is Denmark's largest forest. With its 8000 hectares, it offers plenty of experiences of various kinds. Of course, the forest offers a lot of nice hikes, for example around the lake Store Økssø. Rold Skov is a true mecca for MTB riders, as there are routes of varying difficulty and length. Horse riding in the vast forest is also popular. There is also a wonderful nature playground, Røverknolden, which invites you to play and have fun.

In the old days it could be quite dangerous to visit the place. Legendary robbers such as Bette Fanden, Long Ajes, Lorentz Nielsen and Petronillen kept a sharp eye on the inn, and when guests on their way home passed through Rold Skov, the robbers would strike. But thankfully the robberies in the forest are a thing of the past and today only the legend lives on, along with the beautiful statues commemorating the four robbers.

Thingbæk Lime Mines

The famous Thingbæk Limestone Mines opened to visitors in 1935 and is probably one of Denmark's most distinctive underground museums. It is here that Anders Bundgaard exhibits his plaster figures. Put on some warm clothes and start your journey into the dark and chilly mine galleries and enjoy the majestic limestone caves that seem to appear all of a sudden.

At Thingbæk Møllegaard, lime has been mined for several generations, but it was not until 1926 that a mine was actually established, where lime was mined until 1960. However, the unprofitable production of lime had to give way to market forces.

The Stone Age Centre of Ertebølle

In the middle of Vesthimmerland’s nature, close to the famous kitchen midden from the Iron Age, lies the Stone Age Centre of Ertebølle. As the only Stone Age centre of Denmark, it offers exclusive experiences with the past, playing, and learning.

Viking Centre Fyrkat

The archaeological finds excavated around the castle and at the graves can be seen at Hobro Museum.
