Western Norway

Western Norway destination image

UNESCO, National Geographic and foreign tourists have long been aware of the beautiful Norwegian fjords. Norway's West Country, with its world-famous fjords and mountains, offers beautiful scenery and many activities such as glacier walking and fishing. The fjords cut in from the coast and deep into the mountains.

Each of Norway's lakes has its own characteristics and Sognefjorden is the world's second longest lake. You can also admire the longest waterfalls in areas such as Geirangerfjorden and Trollstigen. The mountain formations around Lysefjorden are famous and include Preikestolen, a mountain plateau from which you can enjoy unique views.

Kristiansund and Ålesund are located in the north of Western Norway and are known for their rockfish, herring and Art Nouveau architecture. Molde, the City of Roses, and Romsdal are known for Trollstigen, often called the world's most beautiful road. If you travel south, you'll come to Bergen, with its beautiful Hanseatic bridge and historic fish market. The city is a good starting point for day trips to the nearby fjords. You can also visit Stavanger, Norway's oil capital, which also has Europe's largest area of old wooden houses.

The best way to experience the Norwegian lakes is on a day or half-day cruise. Mountain tours and glacier hikes are also popular. The mountains descend many hundreds of metres into the water, forming the beautiful lakes You can visit the narrow Nærøyfjord or take a trip to Lysefjorden, where you will find the beautiful Preikestolen. When you look out over Geirangerfjorden, Sognefjorden or Nærøyfjorden, you'll understand why the Norwegian mountains are world-famous. A car holiday in Norway is perfect for everyone and you can explore one of the world's most beautiful landscapes on your own.
