Copenhagen is a city that has something special to offer in every season. In spring, romance fills the air as people gather in the city's gardens and parks. Christmas in Copenhagen traditionally begins on the first Sunday of Advent, when Santa Claus lights the large Christmas tree at Rådhuspladsen following the city's Christmas parade. However, most Christmas markets start the celebrations earlier, usually opening around mid-November.
One of Copenhagen's most popular festive attractions is the classic Christmas market at Tivoli. Alongside the spectacular illuminated gardens, you'll find more than 50 stalls selling a wide variety of Christmas gifts, decorations and treats. Please note that admission to Tivoli is required, with an indicated entrance price of DKK 200.
The large traditional Christmas market at Højbro Plads, also known as Deutsch's Julemarked, offers free admission. Organised by Michael Deutsch in cooperation with the City of Copenhagen, the market features numerous festive stalls surrounded by more than 280,000 sparkling Christmas lights.
Nyhavn also embraces the Christmas spirit, with its charming waterfront setting, festive lights, open fires, mulled wine and traditional Danish æbleskiver. You might even spot Carlsberg's historic horse-drawn carriage passing through the area.
If the busy streets become overwhelming, head to the Round Tower for a quieter moment. From here, you can admire wonderful views of Copenhagen's glittering lights and experience the festive atmosphere from above.
Another charming Christmas market is the H.C. Andersen Christmas Market on Strøget, right in the heart of Copenhagen. Here, you may encounter Santa Claus, Vikings and characters inspired by Hans Christian Andersen, while enjoying a warming cup of mulled wine and traditional German charcoal-grilled sausages.
