Niendorf

Timmendorfer Strand and Niendorf's surroundings are a paradise for those who like to stay outdoors in nature. Whether on horseback, by bike or on foot - the bright rape fields in spring and the golden wheat fields invite you to explore the great outdoors. On one of the excursion boats you can experience the sea right under your skin and find your own way of exploring nature. There's also a lot to discover in picturesque Niendorferhavn. Here you will find everything maritime that belongs to a holiday by the sea: Fishermen who come ashore with fresh fish early in the morning and later sell them as delicious smoked fish in their small stands and excursions with the White Fleet whereby Lübeck Bay presents itself from a whole new side.

Travemünde

About 20 km from Lübeck city centre lies Travemünde - a former fishing village, situated right on the Baltic Sea. The place is stunningly beautiful and the big ships of the Baltic Sea pass very close by. Germany's oldest lighthouse, which today also houses a maritime museum, is located right at the mouth of the Baltic Sea. It is estimated that the original lighthouse was built as far back as the 14th century, but in 1534 it was attacked and destroyed by Danish troops. It has since been restored and today offers a magnificent view from 31 metres above sea level.

Hansapark

If you have children with you, there's no doubt that a trip to the largest amusement park in northern Germany, Hansapark, will be a delight. Stockelsdorf Manor

A magnificent old manor house from 1761, which has housed prominent citizens and later served as a school. Today the manor is used for cultural events such as concerts and exhibitions, while there is also a restaurant. Part of the large green area around the manor is now a beautiful park area where you can stroll and relax while enjoying your mini break in northern Germany.

Tigerpark Dassow

This family-owned adventure and tiger park houses one of Europe's largest tiger and lion enclosures. The park opened in 2003 and has since grown to a 5-hectare area where, in addition to the many different species of tigers and lions, visitors can also see llamas, dromedaries and alpacas, among others.

Holstentor

The iconic city gate, which secured the old city center from the west, is considered by many to be the symbol of Lübeck. Today, the city gate also serves as a museum where you can really experience the history and the amazing building.

Theatre Figure Museum

A fun little museum where you can see theatre characters in many guises. And with over 1000 puppets, there's plenty to look at.

The museum is built in five houses from the old town of Lübeck. The dolls range from modern to classic. There are also dolls from Africa, Asia and Europe.

Neustadt in Holstein

The town of Neustadt in Holstein is a cosy little port town on the Baltic coast. The town is steeped in history and there are plenty of sights to take in, not to mention the beautiful Stadtkirche Neustadt church, the many small shops and the vibrant café life, as well as a good selection of lovely restaurants serving up all things good from the sea.

Visit also zeiTTor, a modern and interactive museum, including excavations from the archaeological site "Marienbad", which presents the history of Neustadt from medieval town life and crafts to the 21st century, but also a bit into the future. Certainly suitable for the whole family.

Lübeck

The city is one of the German Hanseatic cities located next to the Baltic Sea about 60 kilometres northeast of Hamburg. The city is located on the river Trave. The medieval town, with its many historic buildings and UNESCO-listed old town centre, provides the perfect backdrop for a genuine German Christmas market of the very highest standard. If you're really lucky to be in town after a fresh layer of snow, the whole splendid backdrop will be given an extra boost, with the snow-covered streets and rooftops giving the feeling that you're walking around one big Christmas landscape, as if the city was never created or used for anything else.

The Christmas market in Lübeck is extremely traditional and includes numerous stalls, entertainment and activities, Glühwein huts, almond men, marzipan tents and much more. And while you're in Lübeck, it's only natural to sample the city's famous marzipan. That's why you should definitely visit the cosy Café Niederegger, located right next to the beautiful pedestrian street.

Officially, there are seven Christmas markets in Lübeck, each with its own unique charm. But in fact, you could say that the city transforms into one big enchanting Christmas market, branching out across large parts of the city. The biggest of these, however, has to be the historic Christmas market near the town hall and the beautiful Marienkirche. Here you are in the heart of the old city centre, surrounded by countless buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. Christmas markets were already held here around 350 years ago. But it wasn't quite so idyllic then - you had to hoard food to last the winter.

The large network of Christmas markets is extremely diverse and stretches from the city centre and out towards the Trave River in several directions. Take a pleasant stroll around the beautiful maritime surroundings and visit one of the various arts and crafts markets, such as the beautiful crafts market at St. Peter's Church, stop by the family market on the banks of the Trave River or take a stroll to the beautiful illuminated ice rink located just outside Holstentor. Also visit the exciting arts and crafts market in Heiligen Geist Hospital, where many different artists from near and far showcase some of their beautiful works - be it ceramics, woodwork or textiles.

Eutin

Eutin is a more than 1000 year old town, with several of the houses in the inner town more than 300 years old. The town's pedestrian market square is a natural centre of the town, where you can relax in one of the many cafés. From here you can go shopping in the pedestrian streets where you will find several shops. While you are in town, you should also visit the Eutin Castle, which is a museum today where you can have an interesting tour. You can also stop by the small spa park, where thousands of roses and rhododendrons adorn the grounds. Eutin is a great place to visit on a cheap self-drive holiday or cheap mini break in Germany. Just outside the town, you can also visit the hunting lodge at Ukleisee.
