Haugesund

Visit Haugesund, located on the west coast of Norway between Bergen and Stavanger in the middle of the area where the Vikings united Norway into a kingdom. The town grew big and strong with, among other things, herring fishing and the beautiful harbour, where there was also shipbuilding. Today, the city is probably best known for its herring jazz and film festival, and it's also here that you'll find Norway's longest pedestrian street filled to the brim with great deals and opportunities to ooze. Not far from Haugesund is Avaldsnes, home to an exciting Viking museum that certainly deserves a visit. Haugesund is a charming town with a beautiful waterfront and plenty of opportunities to shop and enjoy gastronomy at the many restaurants. The surrounding countryside offers several hiking trails and everything you need for an active holiday.

Dokken Open Air Museum

Find a cheap summer holiday to Norway's West Coast and visit the Dokken Open Air Museum located on idyllic Hasseløy, better known as 'Bakarøynå'. Here you can see and experience the coastal houses as dwellings, herring ageing, butchers workshop, colonial shops and houses dating back to the herring period between 1850-1960. There is also an interesting photo exhibition 'Life between the houses' which gives quite a good insight into both religious and social life in the area. Haraldshaugen - Norway's Royal Monument

In the last century, it was believed that it could be proved that it was this very burial mound that was described in Snorre's royal saga. It was here that the monument was erected in 1872, to commemorate the millennium of Harald Hairfagger's unification of Norway under one king into one kingdom. The monument was designed by architect Christian Christie, and is a large burial mound surrounded by a granite wall consisting of 29 building stones. The Viking farm at Avaldsnes

Sæbøtunet

Visit the authentic farm museum, Sæbøtunet, in Etnesjøe, and get an exciting insight into life and building traditions in the years between 1700 and 1800. Sæbøtunet is the largest authentic farm museum in Sunnhordland and offers a unique journey through time, where you can see old buildings, furniture, textiles and much more from this period. During a major renovation of the farm in 2006, a small amphitheatre was built, which has since been used extensively by schools, kindergartens and various organisations.
