Loano
Loano is a seaside town on the Ligurian coast with a mix of beach life and local culture. The long promenade runs beside a sandy shoreline and is ideal for walking or biking, especially in the evening when the waterfront comes alive. The old town behind the beach has narrow streets, arcades, and historic buildings, including the 16th-century Doria Palace. Loano’s modern marina is another draw, with restaurants, bars, and open views of the sea. There are also regular ferries in summer for coastal trips and whale watching.
Sea Museum Loano
Located in the Kursaal Palace on Loano’s seafront, the Sea Museum offers an engaging look into the town’s maritime heritage.Visitors can view scale models of ships, vintage navigation tools, fishing equipment, and historical documents.A standout exhibit is the Quasar A, a full-sized, functional submarine crafted by local artisan Mario Lentini. The museum also highlights the achievements of Loano’s divers, known for their roles in significant underwater recovery missions, including the retrieval of the submarine Scirè off Haifa’s coast.
Toirano Caves
The Toirano Caves are one of Liguria’s most surprising sights—hidden beneath the hills just inland from the Riviera. A guided tour takes you through winding tunnels and chambers filled with jagged rock formations, underground lakes, and walls shaped over thousands of years. What makes the caves unique is the blend of geology and archaeology: along the way, you’ll see bear bones from the Ice Age and human footprints left around 12,000 years ago. The path is easy to follow and well-lit, making it suitable for most visitors.
Noli is a coastal town on the Ligurian Riviera with a long maritime history and a relaxed pace. Its medieval center is still surrounded by old stone walls and towers, while the hillside ruins of Castello di Monte Ursino overlook the town and sea. The beach is just steps from the old town, with calm waters and views of the fishing boats still used by locals. Noli also has scenic walking paths in the hills above, offering panoramic views of the coastline.
Genova (Genoa)
Genoa is the capital city of Liguria and is beautifully situated in the middle of the Northwest Italian Riviera. The city has more than half a million inhabitants and is home to Italy's oldest football club, Genoa CFC. Located almost in the centre of the region, Genoa is home to a wide range of cultural attractions such as the Royal Palace and gardens in the old town, the famous Piazza de Ferrari in the city centre and a wide range of options whether you want to immerse yourself in the city's culture and history or just want to do a bit of shopping.
The port of Genoa; the old Antico Porto, is a sight in itself. It is the largest in Italy and is always bustling, the air is filled with the smell of food and there are often musical acts to entertain. Here you can enjoy stunning 360-degree views from the rotating elevator balcony, visit Europe's largest aquarium or simply stroll and take in the atmosphere.
In the beating heart of the city, Piazza de Ferrari is characterised by its large fountain, and not far from here you'll find the charming old town where perhaps the city's greatest attraction lies: the Museo di Palazzo Reale - a fantastic museum housed in an authentic and extremely well-preserved 17th-century building. There's plenty of art by some of the greats and the royal gardens are an experience in themselves.
