Koldinghus

Visit the historic town of Kolding and in the centre of the town is Koldinghus, the royal castle which was built by the Danish king in 1268 to defend the border between Schleswig and Denmark. The castle burned down in 1808 and stood in ruins for a long time until the long restoration started. Geographical Garden

This magnificent botanical garden in Kolding dates back almost 100 years, when the gardener and nursery owner Aksel Olsen, in 1925, had the idea of creating a garden where the plants were divided according to their geographical origin. Over the years, the garden grew and today it is a 12-hectare area with seven different geographical gardens such as Siberia, North America and Asia and five themed gardens including a spice and medicinal herb garden and a dahlia garden. In addition, there are three different beautiful rose gardens, a zoo and playgrounds. In 2016, the garden was the first in Scandinavia to receive the prestigious international "Award of Garden Excellence". In the garden you will also find a stone erected in memory of Aksel Olsen.

Fjordenhus

In June 2018, Vejle got a brand new and very special landmark. The world-famous Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson is behind Fjordenhus, a unique building located on Vejle's waterfront. The artwork is packed with details and unconventional angles, and nature has been thought into the construction itself.

The 9,000 square metre building rises 28 metres from the harbour basin and consists of four interconnected cylinders that connect the fjord to the city. The building is made so that it is possible to sail through in a kayak and experience a very special angle. The top of the building is planted with solar panels and at night it is lit from within, almost looking like a lighthouse in the dark.

The walls of the building are made up of thousands of narrow rectangular bricks, with several blue and green stones in between. The green stones dominate the lower part of the building, around the fjord, while the blue ones become more numerous as the building rises towards the sky. And this is just one example of how nature has been taken into account. Another example is a sculpture that is alternately revealed and hidden by the tide.

Thus, it is a unique building where art and architecture merge into one, in beautiful harmony with the surrounding nature.

The ground floor is open to the public every day between 07.00 and 24.00 and there are regular guided tours where you can get an insight into the artist's thoughts and ideas behind the design of the building and the various works of art it houses.

The Christmas market in Odense is a true time travel back to H.C. Andersen's time, and is located in the charming old town close to H.C. Andersen's House. There's a special feeling in the air as Christmas approaches in Odense. Christmas in Odense kicks off when the big Christmas tree on Flakhaven is lit, usually with lots of expectant spectators of all ages. And from here it's not long until the city's big Christmas market gets underway. In 2018, it had the largest Christmas tree in Denmark.

The charming H.C. Andersen Christmas Market is open the first two weekends in December, transforming the beautiful old town of H.C. Andersens Hus into a huge Christmas market as it looked in the early 1800s. The theme has been running since 2013, when it was decided to "have Christmas as in the Old Days at H.C. Andersen's time". Everything is of course built around H.C. Andersen's famous fairy tale characters. Every year, more than 50,000 children and adults visit the cosy Christmas market, which almost feels like a journey back in time to Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen's childhood. The market has around 65 stalls where you will find everything your heart desires from Christmas items, gift ideas, crafts, clothing, toys and much more. Enjoy a nice cup of mulled wine to warm your hands and eat a few of the fluffy Funen apple slices. In addition to the many cosy stalls, there is also plenty of entertainment, such as horse-drawn carriages, historic merry-go-rounds, livery men, jesters and Christmas choirs, all of which help to add to the historical feel and atmosphere.

Just a few kilometres west of Odense, you will find the beautiful nature area around Langesø Estate, where a very charming Christmas market is held every year. Many Funen residents have a tradition of visiting the Langesø market every year with the whole family, either to find just the right Christmas tree, or simply to enjoy the atmosphere with a cup of hot mulled wine and a good portion of apple slices in a cosy setting.
