Hjallerup
Hjallerup is home to around 4,000 people. The town is located in Northern Jutland, and is especially known for the annual Hjallerup Market. Every year, more than 200,000 happy people and 1,400 horses from all over the Nordic countries flock to the Hjallerup Market, which is one of Northern Europe's largest horse and stall markets. Back in the 1700s, the market was a horse market and therefore it is of course still the horses that are the soul of Hjallerup Market and they are what makes the market so special. Today the market is much more than horses. It is also a market for small animals, traders, entertainment, fairgrounds, jokes and the travelling journeymen of the road. For many it is the big event of the year, as thousands look forward to and have done for centuries. In Vendsyssel, Hjallerup Market is also called the 3rd festival. A boy at the Vendsyssels village school had to list the three great festivals and answered: Christmas, Easter and Hjallerup Market. The market is always held on the first weekend in June (the days around the first Sunday in June). Since 1966, volunteers have ensured the smooth and safe running of Hjallerup Market on an unpaid basis.
Visit Hjallerup Mechanical Museum and see unique examples of cars, motorcycles, planes and tractors. They are all in great condition and still roadworthy. You can also see stationary engines that were used on large farms and in manufacturing. You can also see around 250 old radios and televisions dating back to the 1940s. The museum is located on 2,000 m2 in Hjallerup and also includes a cafeteria and meeting rooms, and is handicapped accessible. At the museum you can see the prototype of one of Denmark's first mass-produced electric cars, some of Denmark's oldest and still working tractors (some only exist in this one example), exciting and beautiful vintage cars, various stand engines, old mopeds and motorcycles and Starfighter fighter planes. Please note that the museum is mainly only open during the summer period and is therefore particularly attractive on a family holiday or cheap summer holiday in Northern Jutland.
