The Danish-German painter Emil Nolde (1867 - 1956) is a great celebrity in the region. His watercolours, with their expressive colours, made him one of the leading representatives of Expressionism. The historic Nolde Museum in Seebüll is located on the Danish border and can therefore also be combined with a trip to Denmark.

Tønder

Tønder is Denmark's oldest town, with rights dating back to 1243. The town is particularly known for its retail trade and for the sale of silver.

Every year, the city holds the Tønder Festival, an event that brings together a large number of the city's inhabitants and is also very well attended by visitors from both home and abroad. Tønder Festival is a musical festival that focuses mainly on jazz music.

Wadden Sea

Black Sun

If you're going on a mini-vacation in Southern Jutland this spring or autumn, you might be lucky enough to experience the natural phenomenon of the Black Sun, when starlings gather in the south-west Jutland marshes in huge flocks for migration. The many starlings come from the countries around the Baltic Sea and from Norway. The large flocks of birds make fascinating patterns in the sky just before they land on the ground for the night - this phenomenon is called Black Sun and can in some cases contain as many as 1 million birds. The spring migration of starlings runs from February to mid-April, and the autumn migration begins in August and can last until December.

Rømø

Rømø is created by converging sands which make the Rømø beaches utterly amazing. The island is a part of the Wadden Sea National Park and offers beautiful nature with a rich opportunity for long walks. Sand, beach, water, and lots of holiday experiences for adults and children in a fantastic nature.

Frøslev Camp

Ribe Cathedral

Ribe Cathedral (Vor Frue Kirke), the city's pompous landmark, can be seen far and wide in the flat landscape. Ansgar, the Apostle of the North, built Denmark's first churches (of wood) in Schleswig and Ribe around 860. The present church was begun between 1150-1175 and completed between 1225-1250. After numerous alterations and additions, it is Denmark's only five-nave church, characterised by changing styles and many interesting details.

Gråsten Castle, Castle Garden and Castle Church

Gråsten Castle was built in the 1500s and is a Danish hunting lodge.

Gråsten Castle Church is the only part of Gråsten Castle that is open to visitors.

Gråsten Palace Garden is an English-inspired landscape garden. In summer, visitors can enjoy the large rose and perennial beds, which radiate in a multitude of colours, and there is an outdoor exhibition that tells about the development of the castle garden.

Christmas market at Gram Castle

A weekend break in Gram can be a great idea. During the winter, a Christmas market is held at Gram Castle on selected weekends. Take a stroll among the many stalls selling Christmas goods and make a bargain. Come inside the café and warm up with a cup of coffee and Christmas treats.
