Krakow

Krakow is Poland's second largest city, with over 800,000 inhabitants.

The metropolis of Krakow used to be the capital of Poland, but this title was transferred to Warsaw in 1596.

Krakow is a city filled with beautiful architecture, history and, not least, a bustling city life. Krakow played a major role in World War II, as the Auschwitz concentration camp is not far from the city. Krakow's Jewish quarter was used in the magnificent feature film Schindler's List, which tells the story of the businessman Schindler who saved thousands of Jews from the Holocaust.

The city of Krakow has a total of 72 churches, all of which are still in use. However, St Mary's Church, in the city's central square, is the most visited and the most popular. Every hour a trumpeter plays from the window of the highest tower, drawing crowds every time. Inside the Church of Our Lady, one of the world's most beautiful altarpieces is adorned with the purest gold. The altarpiece is only displayed at certain times of the day.

The city of Krakow offers something for both families and couples, and is ideal for mini breaks and weekend breaks. Shop in one of the city's many boutiques, visit the large shopping centre by the railway station or try some Polish specialities while enjoying the view of the city square.
