Munich

Looking for a self-drive holiday to a modern and international city, where you can also feel the historical flair? Then pack your car and go on a great self-drive holiday to Munich.

Munich is Germany's third largest city and a historic metropolis. During the  World War II Much of the city was destroyed  and has since undergone a major reconstruction and modernisation process, but still contains many historic buildings and monuments worth visiting.

One place that is always good to start when arriving in Munich is the beautiful Marienplatz, which is the most famous square in Munich. On the square is the New Town Hall from 1874, which plays a beautiful carillon three times a day. A real must see. In the basement is the famous Ratskeller restaurant if you are in the mood for a good meal. If you're more into local specialities, visit the many stalls on Viktualienmarkt. Here you can buy everything your heart desires. Afterwards, it's easy to go shopping in the many pedestrian streets. There's something for every budget - from cosy speciality shops to the big fashion houses.

If you want to see the city from above, take a trip to the spectacular Frauenkirche, which is located in the centre of the city and was built in the late 15th century. In the southern tower, you can take the trip to the very top and get a view like  one of the gods overlooking the city.

Another spectacular sight is guaranteed if you visit the beautiful Nymphenburg Palace, which was built in the late 17th century. It is a magnificent summer palace surrounded by a park of almost 200 hectares, where there are lovely paths, beautiful flowers, fountains and the like. You can choose to book a guided tour or take the tour on your own. If you can't get enough of scenic areas, you can also visit one of the most beautiful and largest city parks in the world, the Englischer Garten, which was founded in 1789. It is heavily inspired by the English gardens of the 18th and 19th centuries. Here you can sunbathe, stroll, picnic or surf on man-made waves. It's a haven of peace and tranquillity away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Deutsches Museum is for the whole family and those interested in science and technology. There are 50 exhibition areas, demonstrations on topics ranging from electricity to musical instruments. The museum has a collection of more than 100,000 science and technology-related objects from the Stone Age to the present day.

September also sees the world's biggest beer festival hit Munich, the Oktoberfest. So if you like beer, party people from all over the world, dressed in great folk costumes, and good vibes, then you've come to the right place. Munich's citizens love beer, and if you're not in town for Oktoberfest, you can stop by one of the city's oldest and most popular breweries, the Hofbrauhaus, which dates back to 1589 and served as the official brewery for royalty.

If you want to get away from the bustle of the city and feel the wings of history close at hand, pack your car and take a thoughtful trip to the famous Dachau concentration camp, as the town is also known. Here you will get an insight into the Second World War and its consequences for the people who lived in the concentration camp, specifically through documentary films, museum artefacts and sculptures. It is known to have been the first to open in Germany in 1933.
