Husum

The small port town of Husum meets you on the perfect self-drive holiday to Northern Germany.

A car holiday to Husum brings you to an idyllic harbour town that offers maritime charm spiced with relaxation and stunning nature experiences. The town is perfectly located about 50 km south of Denmark and right by the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea.

Here you can combine the ultimate nature holiday with long-haul cultural experiences. Husum has a wide range of sights and these can be experienced on the town's "Kulturpfad". The route connects the city's 32 most important historical and architectural sites, allowing you to easily locate the most important sights to suit your taste. The route starts at the city's cosy market square by the Old Town Hall and takes you past the Marienkirche, the bronze statue of Tine and Theodor Storm's birthplace, among other things.

Don't deprive yourself of a stroll through the old fishermen's quarter with its picturesque houses and soak up the atmosphere of the harbour district. Cobbled streets, cosy little houses and old warehouses frame the neighbourhood, where you should stop at one of the many cafés or restaurants. Take the opportunity to watch and be fascinated by how much the water level can fall and rise in a short time.

In Husum you will also find several interesting museums, which are worth spending time visiting. The museums are clearly influenced by the town's location by the sea and you can learn about life on and with the sea. The most important museums are Schifffahrtsmuseum Nordfriesland and NordseeMuseum Husum in Nissenhaus.

Also take time to visit the castle outside Husum, which takes its inspiration from Frederiksborg Castle. Dating back to the 16th century, it is the only surviving castle on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. At the castle you will find two fine museums, but the main attraction is by far the castle garden, when the 5 million or so crocuses are in bloom and it becomes clear why it is called "The Purple Wonder of the North".

Nature is at the forefront when you visit Husum and you shouldn't miss a walk over the dyke, where you can enjoy the view of the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. The Wadden Sea is home to many species of flora and fauna, and exciting experiences await you as the changing water levels transform the landscape. Take the opportunity to join a guided tour, where you will get to know nature and experience things you will never forget.

If the whole family is coming on holiday, then FunCenter Husum is the place to go, so the kids can have fun with a myriad of games. The large indoor playground has many adventures and the children can find a whole day's entertainment among slides, jumping pillows and much more.

Holidays can also take you to sights in the vicinity of Husum. When you have your own car on holiday, you have the freedom to experience exactly what you want and at your own pace. Husum has a great location among the historical sights and other idyllic towns in northern Germany. Take a trip to the Viking museum Haithabu outside Schleswig, drive the 20 km south to the inviting canal town Friedrichstadt or be impressed by the area's many beautiful castles.

Whatever you want from your holiday, pack your car and head to Husum for a self-drive holiday where you'll fall in love with the harbour town's charm and impressive natural surroundings.
