Goslar

Take the perfect family self-drive holiday to the medieval town of Goslar.

Just a few hours' drive from the Danish-German border lies the mountainous Harz Mountains. The Harz has been a popular holiday destination for Danes for countless years and understandably so. The green mountain peaks stretch as far as the eye can see and on a driving holiday you have the opportunity to soak it all up at your own pace. In the Harz, you can combine the beautiful natural experience with a visit to some of the Harz's idyllic towns and here you will find a wide range of experiences for the whole family.

Goslar is the largest town in the Harz and a unique experience. The charming town is characterised by old half-timbered houses and buildings with slate coatings in fantastic patterns. The townscape of Goslar is very well preserved and it is not difficult to spot the town's former wealth. The historic old town is not very large, but it is easy to get lost in its many wonderful buildings, including almost 50 churches and chapels.

Your holiday can start with a walk through the atmospheric alleys of the city. The medieval atmosphere can be felt everywhere and there is plenty to see. Take a break in the lively town square and enjoy refreshments in one of the many cafés. Here you can also enjoy views of some of Goslar's most impressive buildings. Kaiserworth used to be the guildhall for scarf merchants and the colourful building is one of the highlights of the town. Take a closer look at the Old Town Hall, where you can step inside and see the beautiful Council Chamber up close. Visit the Town Hall website for information on your visit. This is also where you will find the fun "Kaiserringhaus" carillon, which plays several times a day.

When you go on a self-drive holiday to Goslar, you can also see Germany's oldest secular building, the Kaiserhaus, which was built way back in the mid-11th century. The building is part of the Kaiserpfalz and was used as the residence of the emperor. The entire Kaiserhaus was restored in the 19th century and is very well preserved. The Imperial Palace is located at the foot of the Rammelsberg, which is a must visit for the whole family.

The Harz was once known for its many minerals and metals and there are of course many disused mines in the area. You can take a break from city life and learn more about life in the mines at the Rammelsberg mine. You will learn both about life in the mines in the old days and how it is done in more modern times. A visit to the mine is full of experiences and you can, for example, take a mountain train deep into the mine so that the children can try their hand at being miners.

A good self-drive holiday is filled with a wealth of different experiences and the opportunity to see exactly what suits you. When you go to the Harz Mountains in your own car, you have every opportunity to see and experience something for everyone. In addition to the many fantastic nature experiences in the Harz Nature Park, water dogs of all ages can enjoy fun games in the Vitamar swimming pool, you can have an adventurous experience at Wernigerode Castle or perhaps visit the famous Blocksbjerg mountain. The Harz is the ideal destination for those who want the historical and active holiday at the same time. If this is you, then pack your car and join Risskov on a wonderful journey to the magical Harz Mountains.
