Maribo

Maribo is an old market town and monastery town centrally located on Lolland. Situated close to lakes, forests, the sea and with many interesting museums and sights within easy reach, Maribo is a perfect destination for an adventurous self-drive holiday for the whole family.

Maribo Cathedral is the town's landmark and has a very idyllic location down by Lake Søndersø. The church dates back to the 1400s. Next to the church you can see (and walk around) the monastery ruins of St. Birgitta Monastery from 1416, where Christian IV's daughter Leonora Christina lived. You can see her tomb inside the cathedral.

Don't miss out on great nature experiences at the Maribo Lakes Nature Park, which is located right next to the city and has exciting nature and wildlife. The Maribo Lakes include Søndersø, Hejrede Sø, Røgbølle Sø and Nørresø. Here you can take a lovely walk along the paths and enjoy the unique nature. Take a boat trip on the Anemonen and also experience the beautiful scenery from the water, where there are both guided tours and trips to the island of Borgø in Søndersø. Many sea eagles breed at the Maribo Lakes and if you are lucky you might catch a glimpse of them.

Take a trip back in time with the Museum Railway during the summer months. Here you can ride in a vintage train led by Denmark's oldest roadworthy steam locomotive built in 1869. The veteran train runs between Maribo and Bandholm Harbour on the first railway built on Lolland-Falster and originally opened in 1869.

At Maribo Abbey Museum you can learn more about the history of Lolland. You can see the museum's unique collection of crucifixes dating from the Middle Ages. Or why not experience the past outdoors at the Open Air Museum in Maribo? Explore the old restored houses, the oldest of which dates back to the 1600s. The different types of buildings on display include a schoolhouse, smithy, mill, ropemaker's, farm, and spray house. There is also an old steam engine and a locomotive.

Alternatively, you can see what the town looked like in the period 1850-1900 by visiting Maribo Miniby. Here you can witness the approximately 75 buildings built to a scale of 1:10 in original materials such as miniature brick, oak timber and brick.

If you fancy a dip, you can also do so in Maribo at the Maribo lake, where there is a 30-metre-long beach. Alternatively, it's not far to drive if you prefer to jump in the water or go for a walk along the sea. Pack the car and take a walk on the beach at Smålandsfarvandet on Bandholm Strand or Svanevig Strand, or for example Kramnitse Strand, Bredfjed Strand or Rødbyhavn Strand on the Femer Bælt.

Fill the boot and spend a day at Knuthenborg Safari Park, Northern Europe's largest safari and landscape park. Here you can drive around in your own car among the wild animals and experience them up close. Among other things, you can drive into the Tiger Forest (but remember to keep the windows closed!), drive past rhinos, giraffes, camels, zebras, kangaroos, bisons and monkeys. Take a well-deserved break and let the kids loose in the Limpoland amusement park. Here you'll find everything your heart desires for children and playful souls, including Europe's steepest waterslide, Denmark's largest nature playground as well as a water playground and sand playground.

If you enjoy swinging a golf club, don't forget to stop by Maribo Sø Golf Club, located in scenic surroundings just a few kilometres from the city centre. During the game you can enjoy the beautiful view over the lake and the rich bird life that is in these surroundings.

In the middle of July, Maribo oozes jazz and you can experience a very special atmosphere in the town when the annual Maribo Jazz Festival takes place. The festival is known as Denmark's cosiest festival with over 100 musicians spread over several venues throughout the city.

In Maribo there is a great opportunity to combine nature experiences, both on land and at sea, with historical sights and exciting activities. So pack your car and explore Maribo and the surrounding area.
