Horsens

Pack your car and go on a self-drive holiday to Horsens

With its lovely location at the end of Horsens Fjord and history dating back to the 13th century, this old market town of Horsens is a gem in East Jutland. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, a rich cultural life and its many shopping opportunities, Horsens offers something for everyone.

When it comes to culture, Horsens offers unique experiences. In the award-winning Prison Museum, in the old Horsens State Prison, you can experience what it was like to be an inmate in prison and get behind the bars and meet former inmates who's shadow is on the wall and take in the smells and sounds of the prison on their interactive systems. You can also learn about one of Denmark's most famous escape artists, Carl August Lorentzen, who dug his way out of prison through a tunnel.

Art can be experienced at Horsens Kunstmuseum, which offers recent Danish art in its permanent collection, but also in changing special exhibitions. You can also discover street art and sculptures around Horsens city.

At Glud Museum you can experience village life from the 1600s to the 1920s and explore the old farms and fishing huts. There are various events throughout the year. For example, you can see the old livestock breeds on Animal Day and experience the harvest coming in or the old Christmas traditions in December. At Kloster Mølle, which was a monastery in the Middle Ages, you can see the 1.3 km long dam the monks built. There is plenty to see for adults and children alike.

All year round there are concerts and entertainment in Horsens, which has previously hosted big international stars such as Madonna, Elton John and Dolly Parton as well as well-known Danish artists. In the summer, Rock i Lunden is held at the open-air stage and in various locations around the city.

You can really fill up the boot of your car with all the things you can buy in the 150+ shops in the city centre. If that doesn't satisfies your shopping appetite, there are Saturday markets on Søndergade, Denmark's widest pedestrian street. With so much to choose from, you won't know where to start, but do remember to take a break in one of the town's cafés or restaurants.

If it's nature that captures your interest, Horsens couldn't be better placed with a wealth of opportunities for cycling and walking, or how about a canoe trip on the Gudenå, which is Denmark's longest waterway at over 150 km. From the top of Sukkertoppen you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Gudenå or explore the Refound Bridge, where there are many hiking trails. There is also plenty to see around Horsens Fjord with its lovely beaches. After a short drive from Horsens, you can climb Yding Skovhøj, Denmark's highest point, which stretches a whopping 172.54 metres above sea level.

There's so much to experience in and around Horsens, it's hard to know if you'll get it all in on a self-drive holiday, so book one of our lovely hotels to stay in Horsens for a few days.
