Holbæk

If you're looking for a long weekend or a short self-drive holiday with shopping and relaxed nature, we have the place for you.

Just 60 kilometres from Copenhagen, up in North West Zealand, lies the stunning town of Holbaek. Whether you come by car or by public transport, it is the ideal place for those who want nature, culture and shopping.

You will already feel the cosy country atmosphere on the way there. As you drive along the winding country roads and enjoy the view, you will probably pass a few of the cosy farm shops that the Holdbæk area has to offer. It will be a great opportunity to take a break and look at the fresh country produce. In summer, you'll probably be able to find a packet of strawberries or cherries to enjoy in the car.

When you finally arrive in Holbaek, you will notice that the town has both the charm of a village and the atmosphere of a more modern town. It feels Danish in all the right ways as you walk down the cobbled street among the shops, art and leafy trees. The town has all the big chains, but also many quirky little specialist shops that you won't find anywhere else but right here. So don't over-pack the car. There should be room to fill the boot with all those quirky purchases.

Once you've explored the cosy town, you can take a day out in Holbæk's stunning countryside. Here you will be able to experience the beautiful fjord with long stretches of coastline and the sea. So pack the car with food and drink and take a walk in the beautiful countryside.

Or you can get a real historical experience by visiting the Andelsbyen Nyvang. This cultural and historical museum is the perfect outing for the whole family. Here you can walk down the streets of the 1870s and feel for yourself what it was like from 1870 to 1950. Say hello to the milkmaids on their way to the market and visit the old bakery while you greet the farm labourer. If you come in May, you may be able to experience the thrilling but eerie experience of Denmark's occupation. Here there will be crowds of German troops, checkpoints and raids. Fortunately, it all ends with the liberation of Denmark, where you can see the British troops enter, followed by a parade.

If you like luxury and self-indulgence, Holbæk has something for you too. Here you can get a Turkish bath with something as stunning as a view directly of Holbæk Fjord. In this amazing place, harsh Viking culture blends with oriental culture to give you the best bathing experience full of contrasts and opposites. It is an experience for both body and soul, and something you should give yourself.

We have now had shopping and historical and luxury experiences. But that's not all. There are also the cultural experiences, and here too Holbæk has a wide selection. The city is indeed rich in cultural experiences. It has the country's largest theatre outside Copenhagen, as well as two smaller theatres, Fair Play and Elverfolket. So come along and enjoy an evening with one of Holbæk's theatres. There will be both own productions and guest performances.

If you have children with you, you can take a trip to the Observatory at Brofelde. It's just a 10-minute drive south of Holbæk and is an adventure centre for the whole family. Here the whole family can enjoy exciting experiences in the magical world of natural science.

So if you want to visit a place that has it all, pack your car and go on the perfect driving holiday in Holbaek.
